Goodwill Consulting - forerunner of today's Strategy Institute
In the early 80's, soon after the arrival of the personal computer in SA the first business accounting systems appeared. Ingenuity Unlimited Software (IUS) produced the ACCPAC® range of business applications. The first formal incarnation of the enterprise was Microcomputers for Small Businesses (MSB).
MSB focussed on selling, installing and training on ACCPAC®.
It soon became apparent that to be successful technology could not stand alone; financial information systems needed a much more broad approach. Due to the founder's experience starting as banking strategist in the early 80s, strategy could be comfortably added to the service offering, and Goodwill Consulting was formed. The first major example of the marriage of the two disciplines was Goodwill's work in the early 90s in setting up the strategy and ICT systems for the Start-Up Fund, a ground-breaking, not-for-profit, microfinance-for-development, institution.
This was the seed for the 1993 establishment of The Strategy Institute of South Africa.
The founder's intensive PhD in strategy from Stellenbosch University and the immense source of knowledge unearthed, particularly from South African organisations, served as the driver for strategy and related services.
